In September 2010, Pastor Paul and his wife Meredith held a meeting with about 35 people who had expressed a desire to help him establish a new church should he plant one. Several weeks later, using only the Internet and word of mouth advertising, Destiny Christian Fellowship held its inaugural services on Oct. 24, 2010 at the Santa Clara Marriott in Santa Clara, CA. That day, Pastor Sheppard explained that his goal was simply continue doing what he had been doing for the previous twenty years – winning unchurched and unbelieving people to Christ, teaching them God’s Word, developing a church where people are safe to learn, grow, and experience the transforming power of God. Many caught the vision and immediately made Destiny their new church family.
Unable to find a hotel or school that would rent space to us on a weekly, long term basis, we prayed that God would bless us to have somewhere to meet every Sunday. That prayer was answered! Over the course of 44 months, Destiny held Sunday worship services in five different bay area cities – Fremont, Newark, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Hayward, but we never had a homeless Sunday!
Worshipping in so many different buildings was no easy feat seeing that each week volunteers had to transport, set up, break down, and return to storage two vans full of AV equipment, musical instruments, children’s ministry equipment and materials, and much more. The dedication shown by our volunteers and the faithful attendance and giving of our members during those 44 months allowed our congregation to thrive and ultimately be able to lease and renovate the 37,000+ sq. ft. facility that we now call home.
